The Historic 1908 Courthouse Foundation is a private, non-profit, 501 (c) (3) corporation whose mission is to preserve and maintain the 1908 Courthouse in Independence, VA for future generations. The Foundation also operates the building for the benefit of the people of Grayson County. The building and grounds are wholly owned by the Foundation.

The Foundation is administered by a Board of Directors. There are typically 10  to 16 board members at any time. Board meetings are held at least 4 times a year.

Officers serve 2 year terms and are elected by the Board of Directors at the annual meeting, held in March.

The Foundation office is located on the first floor of the 1908 Courthouse.

Most of our income comes from donations, fund-raising events, Gift Shop sales or (occasionally) matching grants. We do not receive any regular income from state or federal entities.

The Foundation has no paid staff – all officers and Board Members serve as volunteers.

We depend on contributions from visitors and residents of the area for a significant portion of our income.

Other income comes from the following sources:

  • Regular events (e.g. Independence Day Celebration, Mountain Foliage Festival, and Wine Festival etc.)
  • Office rental within the building
  • Treasury Gift Shop
  • Auditorium Rental for special events (concerts, plays, meetings, private parties, etc)
