About the 1908 Courthouse
The Historic 1908 Courthouse serves as the Art & Cultural Center of Grayson County, Virginia. Since 1986 the building has been owned and maintained by the Historic 1908 Courthouse Foundation. The Foundation is a private non-profit charitable organization whose mission is to preserve the building and make it available to the people of Grayson County and the surrounding areas.
Located at the junction of highways US21 and US58 in Southwest Virginia, the 1908 Courthouse is in the center of Independence, the county seat. It is the second courthouse to be built on this spot and the third courthouse overall in the history of the county.
The Historic 1908 Courthouse has been meticulously restored and now houses the Crossroads Museum, the Baldwin Auditorium, The Tourist Information Center, The Tourism Department Offices, The Grayson County Historical Society (office and conference room), The Courthouse Foundation Office, a seasonal office for the Blue Ridge Music Center and private businesses.
The Historic 1908 Courthouse Foundation
is a private, non-profit, 501 (c) (3) all volunteer charitable organization whose mission is to preserve and maintain the 1908 Courthouse inIndependence, VA for future generations. The Foundation also operates the building for the benefit to the public. The building and grounds are wholly owned by the Foundation. Donations fund capital improvements and general maintenance. Music Jam
Every Wednesday night from 6:30 to 9:00pm, the Historic 1908 Courthouse sponsors an Old-time Mountain Music Jam.
